Where can I Pick Blueberries near Saratoga NY, Albany NY

Ah yes, that plump little berry with that sweet, yet tart, bursting flavor that takes over your mouth and has you yearning for more…..

July is National Blueberry Month, and it’s perfect blueberry picking time here in Upstate NY at Liberty Ridge Farm. Picking wild blueberries is a great way to enjoy being outdoors, and you get to take home lots of blueberries to eat. Did you know that blueberries are really good for you? The total antioxidant capacity of blueberries is twice that of spinach and 3 times that of oranges.

Fresh blueberries are in their prime from mid July through August. When picking, select berries that are firm dry, plump, smooth skinned and completely blue, with no hint of red. They’re often coated with a light white coating called “bloom” which actually helps prevent deterioration. Water on the fruit accelerates rotting, so don’t wash them until you are ready to use them. If you store your freshly picked berries in the refrigerator, unwashed and covered, they should last up to two weeks.

Since blueberries hang on the bushes in bunches a but like grapes do, the easiest and fastest way to pick them is hold your bucket under them in one hand and with your other hand, cup a ripe bunch and gently rub them with your fingers. The ripe berries will drop into your bucket, while the unripe ones will remain attached to the bush. At Liberty Ridge Farm you can bring your own bucket or we supply one for you:)  !
